Activity Overview
The underlying pathophysiology of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a variant of pulmonary hypertension, originates in the pulmonary vasculature. Due to the rarity of PAH, few pediatric patients receive specialized therapy. In this video-based program, a pediatric pulmonologist and a pediatric cardiologist provide an overview for pediatricians and other health care providers about the diagnosis of PAH, its classification, its common comorbidities, and a review of therapies used to manage pediatric PAH.
Target Audience
This educational activity is directed toward pediatricians, cardiologists, pulmonologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses, and other health care professionals who treat pediatric patients with PAH.
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this activity, you should be better prepared to:
- Describe the etiologies, signs, and symptoms of PAH in pediatric patients
- Evaluate pediatric patients with suspected PAH according to current recommendations for diagnosis and risk stratification
- Explain the pathophysiologic pathways and treatment targets in PAH
- Summarize available data on targeted therapies for pediatric PAH to support clinical decision-making
- Develop treatment plans for patients with pediatric PAH that include pediatricians as part of a multidisciplinary team to optimize clinical outcomes and quality of life
