Activity Overview
This Expert Illustrations and Commentaries™ symposium features clinical faculty discussing the etiology of hyperphosphatemia in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its management. The burden of hyperphosphatemia in CKD and the role of the paracellular pathway in phosphate absorption are reviewed, and considerations for managing patients with hyperphosphatemia are highlighted. The faculty presentations are enriched with use of video animations to illustrate the intestinal absorption pathways for phosphate and the mechanisms of action of current and emerging therapies for lowering phosphate. This unique format is designed to help clinicians identify and implement best practices in the management of hyperphosphatemia in CKD and to improve patient outcomes.
This educational activity is an archive of the live virtual symposium held on May 2, 2025.
Target Audience
This educational activity is directed toward nephrologists, nephrology nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other health care providers involved in the management of patients with CKD and hyperphosphatemia.
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this activity, you should be better prepared to:
- Summarize the disease burden associated with hyperphosphatemia in patients with CKD
- Describe the pathophysiology of hyperphosphatemia, including the role of the paracellular pathway in phosphorus absorption
- Evaluate recommended guidance for serum phosphorus targets in patients with CKD
- Implement management plans for patients with hyperphosphatemia and CKD based on clinical presentation and severity
